For a normal UK single-phase home, there is no meaningful difference in everyday charging speed. The actual rate is also limited by the vehicle, electrical supply and any load-management setting applied during installation.

myenergi Zappi 2.1: best for detailed energy control

The Zappi 2.1 is a well-established British-made charger designed around solar generation and home energy management. Unlike many app-only chargers, it has a backlit display and physical buttons, so charging modes and live energy flows can be viewed and adjusted at the unit.

Its three main charging modes are:

  • FAST: Charges at the highest available rate, using the grid, solar generation or a combination of available sources.

  • ECO: Continuously adjusts the charge rate to make use of surplus generation, with grid power added when necessary to keep the car charging.

  • ECO+: Prioritises surplus renewable energy and can pause charging when there is not enough surplus available.

The Zappi works particularly well alongside other myenergi equipment. It can be managed through the same app as an Eddi solar diverter or Libbi home battery, creating a joined-up home energy system. It can also work with third-party solar and battery systems when the CT sensors and settings are correctly configured.

The Zappi is available tethered with a 6.5m lead or as an untethered socketed charger. A three-phase 22kW version is also available, although this only provides a benefit where the property has a suitable three-phase supply and the vehicle can accept three-phase AC charging.

Hypervolt Home 3 Pro: best for app control and cable choice

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is a compact, tethered 7.4kW charger with a strong emphasis on design and app-based control. It is available in three colours, with customisable LED lighting and a choice of 5m, 7.5m or 10m Type 2 charging leads.

Its charging modes include:

  • Boost: Charges at the highest available rate.

  • Eco: Uses available solar generation and supplements it from the grid when required.

  • Super Eco: Prioritises surplus solar energy and waits when there is not enough surplus to charge.

The Hypervolt app allows the customer to schedule charging, view energy use, change charging modes and lock the unit remotely. Its BatterySafe feature is designed to help prevent EV charging from unnecessarily draining a home battery. An additional CT sensor can also provide more detailed monitoring with suitable AC-coupled battery systems.

Automatic load management is included, allowing the charger to reduce its output when necessary to help protect the property's incoming electrical supply from overload.

Which charger is better for solar panels?

Both chargers can divert surplus solar generation into an EV and both can provide a mixture of solar and grid power when required.

The Zappi 2.1 provides more information and adjustment directly at the charger and is a natural choice for homes already using the myenergi ecosystem. The optional Harvi wireless sensor can also be helpful in certain installations where running a CT cable back to the charger would be difficult.

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro also offers effective solar charging through its Eco and Super Eco modes, with clear monitoring and control through the Hypervolt app.

Solar-only charging normally requires approximately 1.4kW of sustained surplus generation before an EV can begin charging. Performance will therefore depend on the size of the solar array, household demand, weather, time of year and the vehicle being connected during daylight hours.

What if the property has a home battery?

Both chargers can be used at properties with battery storage, but correct setup is important. A home battery can see an EV charger as another household load and may attempt to power it unless the system is configured to give the battery the desired priority.

The Zappi can use an export margin and, with suitable AC-coupled batteries, an additional CT sensor to help avoid unwanted battery discharge during solar charging. It offers its deepest integration when used with the myenergi Libbi battery.

Hypervolt's BatterySafe mode is designed to protect stored energy, and an additional CT sensor can provide live battery-flow information with suitable AC-coupled systems.

The best arrangement depends on whether the battery is AC-coupled or DC-coupled, how its inverter is configured and how the EV tariff controls charging. Easy Spark will consider the complete energy system rather than treating the charger as a standalone appliance.

Which charger works best with off-peak EV tariffs?

Both the Zappi 2.1 and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro can schedule charging during cheaper overnight periods. They are currently compatible with leading smart-charging services including Intelligent Octopus Go and OVO Charge Anytime, subject to the provider's current eligibility requirements, a compatible smart meter, an internet connection and up-to-date charger firmware.

Neither charger automatically makes electricity cheaper on its own. The savings come from using a suitable electricity tariff and allowing the charger or energy supplier to schedule charging at lower-cost times.

Tariffs and compatibility can change, so customers should confirm current eligibility with their energy supplier before switching tariff or choosing a charger solely for a particular integration.

Tethered or untethered?

The Hypervolt Home 3 Pro is tethered, which means the charging cable is permanently attached. This is convenient for everyday use because you simply unwind the lead and plug it into the car. Its three cable-length options can also suit wider driveways or cars that are parked in different positions.

The Zappi 2.1 is available either tethered or untethered. The tethered version provides the same everyday convenience, while the socketed version gives a cleaner appearance when it is not in use and allows the customer to use a separate Type 2 cable.

The right choice normally depends on the charger's position, the location of the vehicle's charging port and how the car will be parked.

For a straightforward 7kW home installation using an off-peak tariff, both will charge the same vehicle in roughly the same time. In that situation, the cable arrangement, controls, appearance and quality of the installation are likely to matter more than the small difference in their advertised power ratings.

Yes. Both work as normal smart EV chargers using electricity from the grid. Solar integration is an additional feature, not a requirement.

Which charger is faster?

On a normal single-phase domestic supply, there is no meaningful difference: both can deliver approximately 7kW when the vehicle and electrical supply allow it. The Zappi is also available as a 22kW three-phase model, but this requires a suitable three-phase supply and a vehicle capable of accepting the higher AC charging rate.

Can both chargers use surplus solar energy?
